Join our weekly book sorting sessions—a short hour flexible "come when you can" opportunity to discover literary treasures. Or, dive into the excitement of our quarterly book sales, where you can help welcome neighbors, assist shoppers in finding their next favorite read, or lend a hand with setup & cleanup.
Volunteering with Friends is a perfect way to build team spirit, embark on a family service project, or simply share your individual passion for books.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Weekly Wednesday Book Sorting (11:30 AM – 1 PM)
Friends meet at the upstairs community room at the Woodland Hills Branch Library to sort through donated books and media, storing them for the next sale. This task requires moving trolleys filled with books, moving wheeled tables, stacking chairs and setting up signs. Volunteers will be walking, bending, and lifting (if possible). We work around your ability. Books are sorted into various categories; fiction, non-fiction, history, biography, children’s and many more. Any items donated that are in poor condition are aside to give away for free, or recycle.
• New volunteers are always welcomed to join us during normal sorting days. Email us today to coordinate your first visit!
Quarterly Book Sale: Setup, Manning & Cleanup
Want to make new Friends? We need you!
Quarterly Book Sale Setup: help set up and take down tables before and after the quarterly book sales. This involves moving boxes of books (no greater than banker sized) from the community room storage closet to the community room where the sales are held. We use trolleys to move the books out of the closet and set them out on the tables. This activity involves bending, lifting and organizing.
Quarterly Book Sale Volunteers: Pick your 3-4 hour shifts during the 2 days book sale to organize books that are on sale, greet customers, and assist our visitors in finding the books of their dreams. Friendly greeters are always welcome! Get on our mailing list and find your shift!
Quarterly Book Sale Clean Up: 2-3 hours to break down foldable tables, build boxes, stack and pack books. We clean the floors and put lights and equipment back into the closet. We use trolleys, the elevator and ramps. This activity involves bending, cleaning, lifting and organizing. Get on our mailing list and to sign up for future book sale clean up events.
And more! In addition to setting up for the sale, manning the sale, and breaking down the sale, there are other ways to help!
Collect Boxes, Deliver Books, Technical and Administration
We have an ongoing need for banker sized boxes. We welcome people to collect empty banker sized boxes (new or slightly used) to the Friends throughout the year. Have those Amazon boxes laying around? Donate them to Friends!
We often need help delivering unsold books (packed in boxes) to various neighboring senior facilities and charitable organizations after our sales. Get on our mailing list to see if you can help!
Have technical expertise or a special interest? We need help with social media efforts, marketing, writing and general administration. We would love to hear from you, email us today!
We look forward to being your Friend!
Note: Per the city of Los Angeles, all full-time volunteers are required to have a background check, free of charge.
